yes it is common for people to do this, however depending on how much you owe on the truck, and how much its worth can have a few pitfalls Often times people owe more than a vehicle is worth, this is called being upside down, so if you owe 20,000 and the truck is worth 15,000 you are upside down. If the dealer gives you 15,000 then that 5,000 will be added to the new loan. It would be better to pay the principal down to 15,000 or less, becasue then you will not have 5 grand plus interest for several years, on top of the new loan. And be aware of your loan due dates for both loans, crappy timing can give you a double payment, (which could work to a dealers advantage if you are not paying attention.
Something else few people consider, if you pay your principal down as fast as you can, you can save yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars in interest money over several years, I have done this on my last two loans and it works great. just make it clear the extra money is for principal. good luck, read the contract carefully and watch those numbers, There are complaints on yahoo answers about people who make a verbal deal, and then some rotten finance manager makes a different one and they sign a contract for several thousand more, and have to live with it.
Another thing some dealers do, is overprice cars, and undervalue your trade in, www.nada.com has a free consumer guide to almost everything from new cars, new used cars, to classic cars trucks boats motorhomes motorcycles tent trailers, you name it. What nada guide says your used vehicle is worth, and what a dealer will offer you are two different things. Dealers often count on people being ignorant about prices, your best defense is too study the guide, you need to know what your truck is worth, and stay as close as possible. Same with your new car, a dealer can overprice there too, so once you know EXACTLY WHAT YEAR MAKE AND MODEL you want, familiarize yourself with the price

==== if the car dealer sees that you are scored high on your credit rating and the down payment will adjust the loan to justify the total financed it might work === best you visit the dealership and 1st talk price and what monthly payment you can expect == then conversation shift to all your dealings with trade and combined pay off ... the dealer might give you nothing for your trade .. pay off the truck and sell it total price and you get nothing be careful of this tactic... ... shop on line for prices for both and see what the math can tell you .. if you owe too much for thep/u then you are upside down in the p/u and you are not in the position to sell it .... the less you tell the dealerman the better your buying power and remember those people are not your friends __ all they want is your money .. read the fine print b4 u sign it.

No this is not common, and will not work unless you owe very little on the truck, and the dealership will agree to do some numbers magic. But... I would strongly discourage you to try. The more complicated the transaction, the more likely it is that you will get screwed. The dealerships job (and I mean everyone - salesman, and especially the financing guy that closes the deal) is to seperate as much of your money from you as possible. You will just be giving them another opportunity to do so. In the long run, you will end up paying much more than if you simply paid two loans.

If you want to lower the payment on the truck, the very best thing you can do is visit your bank or credit union, and see about a refi on your truck loan. Do this before the car purchase, and you will be in a better position to qualify for the car loan.

Financed cars is more expensive to insurance cause it requires full coverage. You can compare how much you would pay for full coverage of this car using this tool - carquotes.sinfree.net

Oh, I bet you'll get a couple bites on that. Just go out there and apply. The worst they can say is no. But, son, have you considered going out on Craig's list and buying a car for $5000? That will buy you a good reliable commuter that you won't have to pay a car payment on. Seems worth it to me!
